What do you think is the biggest barrier to people giving to a sexual violence charity?
Survivor Space Oxfordshire (SSO) is the only charity providing specialist support to survivors of sexual violence in Oxfordshire. CEO, Lauren Kendall, leads an amazing team of staff and volunteers who are passionate about empowering survivors and helping them to heal and move on with their lives.
SSO were also one of our Silver beneficiary charities for Raise’24 and have recently received a grant of £1,200. On being a part of Raise and renewing SSO’s B4 membership, Lauren commented. “We’re delighted to be part of Raise ’25 and a collective of amazing charities working in so many ways to help people in Oxfordshire. The Raise and B4 community make such a hugely positive impact on so many, and we’re so proud to be part of this.
“We’re also benefiting as an organisation from being involved with B4. My colleagues and I have joined lots of events over the past year from black tie dinners to the brilliant ecosystems covering a wide range of topics. I really loved the excellent business development session that Caroline O’Connor ran for us at B4 recently. Our group passed sheets around so that everyone could suggest a question or raise a potential frustration/problem for the businesses in the room. For a small (but mighty!) charity like SSO, this kind of insight is incredibly helpful.”
B4’s CEO, Richard Rosser, added. “I’ve said before how hard it struck me hearing Lauren talk about the reactions she gets from some organisations she approaches for support. SSO rely on donations to continue providing the life-saving support they do, and it’s so frustrating to hear businesses don’t want to be associated with SSO and the work they do. It’s small-minded and, in my opinion, ignorant. I’m proud to have Lauren and her team as part of the community but we should all do what we can to support their work in whatever way we can. As Lauren has already said the feedback she gets at B4 ecosystems is so useful, let’s open up the conversation….what do you think is the biggest barrier to people giving to a sexual violence charity?”
