The Art of Horticulture, Design, and Woodland Creation at Nicholsons
At Nicholsons, the blend of horticultural expertise, creative design, and environmental responsibility comes together to create breathtaking landscapes and future-proof woodlands. Managing Director Liz Nicholson shares insights into how the company continues to innovate in these areas, staying true to its values of creativity, passion for the planet, and dedication.
A Passion for Horticulture and Design
With a strong background in horticulture, Liz Nicholson has always been deeply fascinated by the technical side of the industry. However, it’s the design element that has allowed Nicholsons to shape some of the most stunning and carefully considered outdoor spaces.
“We really do create some very, very beautiful spaces, and I think we’re very privileged in being able to do that,” says Liz.
Working on high-end private projects often bound by non-disclosure agreements, Nicholsons has built a reputation for delivering exceptional designs in some of the most exclusive and breathtaking locations. While the details of their projects remain confidential, one thing is clear: the team’s dedication to excellence ensures that each garden is a work of art, thoughtfully designed to enhance both aesthetics and the natural environment.
Woodland Creation: A Sustainable Future
Nicholsons’ expertise extends far beyond gardens. The company is also at the forefront of woodland creation, ensuring that new forests are not only visually appealing but also resilient to future environmental challenges.
Liz explains, “At Nicholsons, we take our creative values and passion for the planet to make sure that we design woodlands that are really future-resilient and robust, really well considered in the landscape.”
A landmark project with Blenheim Palace showcases this commitment. As an active B4 Member, Blenheim partnered with Nicholsons to create 120 hectares of new woodland, an initiative that successfully attracted private finance into the sector. This innovative approach has opened up new opportunities for sustainable forestry and biodiversity enhancement.
Nicholsons’ forestry team, described by Liz as “salt of the earth,” plays a crucial role in ensuring these projects succeed. Their approach prioritises biodiversity by carefully selecting tree species, improving soil health, and enhancing resilience against climate change. A full-time team member continues to oversee the Blenheim project three years after its establishment, ensuring long-term success.
Leading the Way in Green Innovation
Nicholsons’ holistic approach to landscape design and woodland creation exemplifies how businesses can combine technical expertise, environmental responsibility, and creative vision. From private gardens to large-scale reforestation efforts, their work is shaping the future of sustainable land management.
For those inspired by Liz Nicholson’s leadership and the values at Nicholsons, becoming a B4 Member offers a unique opportunity to connect with like-minded businesses that are driving positive change.
