On Wednesday 6th May, learners from across Abingdon & Witney College showcased their talent, professionalism and technical expertise at their inaugural Construction Trade Skills Competition.

On Wednesday 6th May, learners from across Abingdon & Witney College showcased their talent, professionalism and technical expertise at their inaugural Construction Trade Skills Competition. The event celebrated the next generation of tradespeople, highlighting the high standards, practical skills and industry knowledge being developed across the College’s construction programmes.

The one-day event brought together apprentices and full-time learners to complete practical, trade-specific tasks based on real workplace scenarios and industry standards.

Competitions took place across three sites: Electrical Installation and Design, Surveying & Planning at Abingdon campus, Plumbing at Witney campus, and Carpentry at Bicester campus. Throughout the day, learners showcased their problem-solving ability, technical knowledge and professional approach under realistic assessment conditions.

Judging and presentations were held in the afternoon, with members of the College’s Senior Management Team and Governing Body visiting each campus to meet learners and staff and view the competitions in action.

The competition was supported by employers and industry partners including VitrA, MKM Building Supplies, GLT Electrical Wholesalers, Jim Cousins Trust, Breedon’s, Beard Construction, CITB, CIPHE, Screwfix, and Henstridge Construction, who contributed through judging, sponsorship and prizes, helping to ensure a strong industry focus.

The event strengthened links between full-time courses and apprenticeships, supporting clearer progression pathways for learners. Following the success of the pilot, there are plans to develop the Trade Skills Event into an annual fixture, expanding to include more curriculum areas and increased employer engagement.

Mark French, Head of Bicester Construction Skills Centre, explained:

Events like this give our learners the chance to experience real industry expectations, build confidence and showcase their skills. It’s also a fantastic way to bring together staff, employers and partners to celebrate the talent we have across our construction provision.
