Through the Government funded scheme, construction learners from across Abingdon & Witney College, including those on apprenticeship and T Level programmes, have enjoyed quality placements in St Lucia, Spain and the United States, gaining real‑world industry experience while immersing themselves in new cultures.
During March and April 2026, students had the opportunity to work on live construction and electrical projects, collaborating with international employers, charities and specialist trades. Going beyond traditional study visits, the placements offered hands‑on experience aligned with industry standards and professional expectations.
In St Lucia, construction students took part in intensive work placements on live commercial and residential developments, working alongside local contractors and specialist trades including stone masons, tilers, electricians, and plumbers. Learners also visited Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, St Lucia’s national college, giving them valuable insight into vocational education in another country.
Construction and T Level students also completed international placements in Jerez, Spain, where they gained experience using advanced surveying equipment, interpreting technical drawings, and collaborating with Spanish construction teams; developing both technical expertise and cross‑cultural communication skills.
Alongside technical learning, the College has embedded social value and community engagement into its international placements. Electrical apprentices travelled to Columbia, South Carolina, where they worked with Transitions Homeless Shelter. They completed around $30,00 worth of work, saving the charity money that can now be used elsewhere, while developing their trade skills in a global context.
Students taking part in the St Lucia programme completed charity challenges in support of United Through Sport, raising over £2,000, reinforcing the importance of giving back while working abroad.
The impact on students has been life-changing; with learners reporting increased confidence, independence and resilience; alongside strengthened teamwork, communication and employability skills. Many also developed life skills such as budgeting, managing daily responsibilities overseas, and adapting to new working cultures.
Principal and CEO Jacqui Canton praised the programme, saying:
“It’s been wonderful to see the incredible experiences our students have gained through their international work placements under the Turing Scheme. These opportunities will stay with them for years to come and make a real difference to their futures.”
The College sees the Turing Scheme as a vital way of ensuring that international trips are accessible to learners from all backgrounds, particularly those studying technical and vocational pathways.
Abingdon & Witney College is committed to continuing and expanding its global partnerships, ensuring that more students can benefit from valuable learning experiences abroad that enhance skills, confidence, and career prospects.
