The Importance of Employment Rights and Wellbeing
Employment rights form the bedrock of wellbeing . The employment relationship is a fundamentally unequal one β an individual contracting with a business or corporate power.
Employment law has been developed to redress that balance, and adherence to those standards is at the heart of a respectful and fair relationship. It is a broad topic and there are many areas where we can help businesses to stay on the right side of the rules. For example:
Clarity
- Feeling secure from the outset, and having clarity over your position, can help employees to feel valued. Having clear, professional documentation, such as a good employment contract and a staff handbook that suits your business is a great start, and sends the message to recruits that you are an employer that does the right thing.
We help employers ensure their documentation is legally compliant, and can help with contracts and policies (for example covering the procedures to follow if there are grievance/disciplinary issues, homeworking, and family rights).
Equality
- Working in an environment where individuals are respected and not subject to discrimination is a fundamental of wellbeing. The Equality Act 2010 protects against discrimination based on a number of protected characteristics β age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.
We can help with training, and advise employers on ensuring their decisions are taken, and policies implemented, in a way that observes these rights.
Respectful processes
- We are sadly seeing redundancies at the moment, and acknowledge that in some instances that is unavoidable. These processes should to be conducted fairly and respectfully to support the wellbeing of individuals at such a challenging time.
