Fun & Laughter at Mollie’s Motel & Diner

In a world of social-distancing, ‘should we, shouldn’t we’, ‘can you hear me’, wash your hands craziness, it’s nice to get a slice of normality. We ventured to Mollie’s Motel & Diner located on the A420 near Buckland for a family dinner and a good night’s sleep. We weren’t disappointed. B4’s Richard Rosser and family enjoyed Mollie’s.

Let’s face it, we could all do with the odd bit of fun having experienced a fair amount of downs in the last four to five months. I make intros to a fair few people in the business community but can’t remember an introduction to an establishment causing so much upbeat response, ‘I can’t wait to go, I’ve heard great things’; ‘I went last week, it’s superb’; ‘It’s a family favourite, the kids love it and we go at least three times a month’.

Mike Hogan, Head of Openings and ex GM at Victors, is the man responsible for ensuring Mollie’s runs to plan in Oxfordshire with plans for seventeen new Mollie’s around the UK over the next five years. “We’re currently working on openings for Bristol in April and Manchester in May. Bristol will be similar in size to this one but Manchester will have about two hundred rooms and one hundred and sixty covers in the diner. We’re really going for it and the guys behind Mollie’s are really excited for the future….I couldn’t resist the opportunity to join them.”

Everything about Mollie’s is high quality…for those readers who have experienced Soho Farmhouse, the same interior quality feel oozes throughout everything. The style is different but the level of quality is the same. The branding is clever – simple but memorable. The large neon sign when you drive in to the site is a statement in itself, with Mollie’s sitting loud, proud and confident on the side of the road…a real oasis.

We checked in to our room – social distancing rules and regulations are adhered to fastidiously with all staff wearing masks at all times, hand sanitisers at all key entry points and one way systems in operation in the motel. Our room was comfortable and well equipped – all you would need for a one night stop off with a super comfy bed and luxurious and high powered shower.

Mollies’ 79 rooms range in size, from cosy double rooms to interconnecting family rooms. All have Egyptian cotton sheets, rainforest showers and Cowshed (Soho’s brand) products in the bathrooms. All rooms have keyless entry which is available through the Mollie’s app.

After a quick freshen up we walked over to the diner and met Abi and Tilly who were joining us.

Mollie’s is exciting, it’s fun, it’s vibrant. The energy consumes you as soon as you walk in and seeing families laughing and tucking into sensational looking burgers just sucks you in even more. Menus are a thing of the past in many restaurants these days and we ordered our food having scanned a QR code on a business card – ingenious and no doubt soon we’ll be able to order on our phones too.

We were looked after superbly by the team at Mollie’s all night. The food was excellent…we started with a couple of bowls of nachos with guacamole dip followed by an assortment of traditional and plant based burgers and fries (the succulent chicken also looked amazing as it was delivered to surrounding tables). Tina tucked into a mojito whilst I had a pint of Cotswold Lager served in a tall frosted Cotswold Lager pint glass….it went down a treat. Although the desserts looked incredible, we were all full. Maybe we’ll enjoy a handspun milkshake or Mollie’s Jollie’s another day, perhaps sooner than we think!

The Diner is open daily from 9am – 10pm. To make a reservation, use the availability checker on the website homepage (www.molliesmotel.com). Guests are asked to pre-book, as Mollie’s aren’t accepting walk-ins and are only accepting card and contactless payments at this time. The Drive Thru is open from midday to 8pm every day.

After a great night’s sleep, Tina and I enjoyed poached eggs and avocado on sourdough with fresh orange juice and tea for breakfast, said our goodbye’s to Mike and his excellent team and made our way back to Oxford.

For those of you who remember Chris Evans’ show ‘Don’t forget your toothbrush’, sometimes it’s not a bad idea. My variation on this all-time classic was ‘do forget your electronic toothbrush’ so you have the excuse to go back and collect it, via the drive thru…honestly, the best burgers you’ll ever eat and the cheeky chocolate milkshake I had to accompany me back to Oxford was an inspired choice!

Make Mollie’s top of your list for eating out…it’s a treat for everyone.
