SOBELL HOUSE BUSINESS BREAKFAST
Breaking News: The Remaking of Journalism and Why It Matters Now
With guest speaker Alan Rusbridger
We are pleased to invite you to our second Sobell House Business Breakfast, which is taking place at Gee’s Restaurant on the Banbury Road on Friday June 28th. It is a wonderful venue providing you with a great networking opportunity whilst listening to a fascinating talk enjoying a fabulous cooked breakfast. A great way to start the day!
We are delighted to have Alan Rusbridger as our guest speaker. Alan is the Principal of Lady Margaret Hall here in Oxford and before that was the Editor of the Guardian Newspaper for many years. He will be speaking about his latest book Breaking News: The Remaking of Journalism and Why It Matters Now. This book is a great read, reflecting on his twenty years as editor of the Guardian; and his experience of breaking some of the most significant news stories of our time, including the Edward Snowden revelations, phone-hacking, WikiLeaks and the Keep it in the Ground campaign.
How do we know any more what is true and what isn’t? We are living through a communication revolution in which falsehood regularly seems to overwhelm truth. The news media have been disrupted by huge and fast-moving changes. The growth of social media and with it the ability of billions of people to publish has created a vast amount of unreliable and false news which now competes with, and sometimes drowns, more established forms of journalism. In Breaking News Alan offers an urgent and agenda-setting examination of the past, present and future of the press, and the forces menacing its freedom.
This is a great opportunity to meet one of our leading journalists and hear why quality journalism matters now more than ever.
Please do join us for what will be a very interesting and thought provoking breakfast event. Very special thanks to Alan Rusbridger for speaking and all the wonderful people at Gee’s for their generosity and hospitality in hosting our second Sobell House Business Breakfast.
